2) 11 course 'Small' Frei Low pitch f ’.
String length: 67.7 cm.
Based on the smaller of the two Hans Frei lutes in the Kunsthistorischesmuseum in Vienna (C34). This lute was built in Bologna c.1550 as a 6 course (or possibly a 7 course) lute, and converted, probably in France c.1650, to an 11 course lute (its present state). As with the above 11 course, I have incorporated details from the painting of Charles Mouton into my design. Back of 11 curly maple ribs. Neck and peg-box veneered with ebony. Fingerboard, points and edge binding of ebony. Chanterelle tuner on the peg-box.
